Fifth Graders will be taking a test on the United States Constitution in the third week of February. Students will receive a review sheet, which they will complete in class, and which they must use to study for the test. The test dates will be as follows:
5C: Tuesday, February 18th, 2014 5B and 5A: Wednesday, February 19th, 2014 Homework for the next two weeks will be to study for the test! Students will begin work on their differentiated group projects on the Bill of Rights next week. We have just finished reading the Constitution of the United States, and we will begin reading the Amendments next week. We have learned in Article II, Section 3 that "The State of the Union" is the address presented by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress. The practice of giving this address arises from a command given to the President in the Constitution:
"He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient." — Article II, Section 3 This address is given by the President every year. The address not only reports on the condition of the nation, but also allows the President to outline his/her legislative agenda and his/her national priorities. Although the language of this constitution is not specific, traditionally, the President makes this report annually in late January or early February. This year the State of the Union address takes place on Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 at 6:00P.M. PST. Homework: All students must watch The State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 at 6:OOP.M. Students must watch at least the first ten (10) minutes of the President's address to receive credit for homework. Fifth Graders are continuing to read the US Constitution. Within the next few weeks students will begin differentiated group projects in class on the Bill of Rights. Once the group assignments have been completed, each group will be given the opportunity to share its assignment with the class. We will be spending the rest of January and most of February working on this project.
To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we will be researching information on the Civil Rights Movement. We will use that information to work on an integrated Language Arts and Social Studies assignment. State Report: Famous People of the State Final typed reports will be due as follows: 5C: Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 5A and 5B: Wednesday, January 29th, 2014 Fifth Graders have been reading about the Articles of Confederation and through discussion, they have identified its strengths and weaknesses. They have created their, "Wanted: A Just Right Government" posters. They have also been working on assignments that are paving the way to their reading and studying the US Constitution, which will begin when we return to school in January after winter break.
Homework: State Seal. 5A and 5B assignment due Wednesday, December 18th, 2013. 5C assignment due Tuesday, December 17th, 2013 Fifth Graders are about to become Constitutional scholars! We are presently learning about The Articles of Confederation, and identifying its strengths and weaknesses. In our classroom discussions we have been thinking about what needed to be changed to create a stronger, more efficient government. Students have begun to create their own wanted posters, entitled, "Wanted: A Just Right Government". This will lead us into further studies of our Constitution. Fifth Graders will be reading the full text of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and some of the other Amendments! When it comes to homework , hopefully we will avoid having anyone plead the Fifth Amendment!!!
