We have just finished reading the Constitution of the United States, and we will begin reading the Amendments next week. We have learned in Article II, Section 3 that "The State of the Union" is the address presented by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress. The practice of giving this address arises from a command given to the President in the Constitution:
"He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient." — Article II, Section 3 This address is given by the President every year. The address not only reports on the condition of the nation, but also allows the President to outline his/her legislative agenda and his/her national priorities. Although the language of this constitution is not specific, traditionally, the President makes this report annually in late January or early February. This year the State of the Union address takes place on Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 at 6:00P.M. PST. Homework: All students must watch The State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 at 6:OOP.M. Students must watch at least the first ten (10) minutes of the President's address to receive credit for homework.

Fifth Graders are continuing to read the US Constitution. Within the next few weeks students will begin differentiated group projects in class on the Bill of Rights. Once the group assignments have been completed, each group will be given the opportunity to share its assignment with the class. We will be spending the rest of January and most of February working on this project.
To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we will be researching information on the Civil Rights Movement. We will use that information to work on an integrated Language Arts and Social Studies assignment.
